El Rocío Pilgrimage themes are rooted in the Andalusian romantic painting genre, born in the nineteenth century with the arrival around 1830 of many artists in southern Spain, mainly English and French, which also popularized the taste of the authentic Andalusian culture throughout Europe.
Shortly thereafter, during the second third of the nineteenth century, local painters like Dominguez Becquer, Cabral Bejarano, Cortés Aguilar and Federico M. Eder would take over with their canvases, depicting Sevillian and Andalusian typical scenes such as streets and patios, majos and bandits, singing and dancing scenes, and also scenes of pilgrimages such as El Rocío.
Romantic costumbrism themes, and especially El Rocío scenes have survived until today, evolving from a technical point of view and delving into the details and nuances of the scenes, which have become increasingly complex.
