The scenes of figures on the beach and gatherers of shellfish are included within the tradition of marine painting, which in turn includes all forms of figurative art whose first inspiration is the sea and everything connected with it.
Beach scenes have always represented an important source of creativity along with scenes from the open sea, naval battles and ships, as well as rivers and estuaries.
Beach scenes have never been regarded as a main pictorial genre according to academic parameters of French influence; however, this current did not fail to experience a boom, especially in the period between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.
Several authors have marked the development of the genre over the centuries, and among them we can count Carpachio Vittore, Rembrandt, Giovanni Antonio Canal and Francesco Guardi (who are prominent members of the Venetian school of the eighteenth century).
Later, during the nineteenth century, 'plenair' beach scenes (outdoor painted scenes) popularize, thanks to Paul Gauguin, and Leon Dabo.
Within the Spanish art scene, we should mention Sorolla, the great nineteenth-century post-Impressionist master who devoted much of his work to immortalize beach landscapes, as he did with his famous 'Children on the Beach' (1910).
