The world of painting found in flamenco a constant source of inspiration, almost since it made its appearance between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Leading figures of Sevillian costumbrist painting such as José García Ramos dedicated many of his oil paintings to capture this dance.
Later, poets from the Generation of '1927 such as Federico García Lorca and Rafael Alberti defended this art, which had so far been discredited by the intellectuals of the time; as a consequence many more artists began to show a great interest in it. Paintings with scenes taken from the music cafés started to proliferate, which were the traditional place where dancing and singing improvised scenes took place, as well as in farmhouses and forges.
In the twentieth century, Impressionist painters like Sorolla and Zuloaga would join this trend along with Symbolists, such as Julio Romero de Torres.
With the passage of time and the influence of expressionist painters, artists began to focus on gesture and expression more than in the aesthetic dimesion of their artwork, changing the pictorial perception that they had of flamenco until that point. Fausto Oliveras, Agustín Gómez and Antonio Povedano' s paintings are an example of this emphasis on capturing the soul of flamenco beyond the composition and the aesthetic dimension of the paintings.
Nowadays, spots of bright colors like red, (as seen in the works of Carmen Shaman and Aurora Gallego) become the focus of many artworks, which help to express the energy and anguish which are so characteristic of flamenco.
