Current modern art is rooted in the pictorial trends that emerged in the twentieth century, specifically after World War II, when the world and the vision we had of it changed dramatically. To express these cultural and ideological changes, several avant-garde currents emerged, and abstract expressionism was among them, with Jackson Pollock as its principal representative. Other currents were color field, pop art with Andy Warhol, Op art, minimal art, postminimalism and photorealism (represented in Spain by Juan Francisco Casas), among others.
From the 1970s conceptual art and Performance art arise, which are new forms of artistic expression that use unconventional means and ways to express the message or concept they want to convey, often including painting among those media.
From the 80s postmodern painting appears as such, which uses details of previous artworks, recycling techniques, themes and ideologies of other artistic currents, but providing a contemporary design. In general, postmodern art is an attempt to reflect the chaos and complexity of the society in which we live.
Among the most prominent artists of this movement, we can name David Salle, Baselitz, Kiefer, Clemente, Chia, Schnabel, Fischel, Basquiat or Rothenberg.
